Are there any Chantix lawsuits?
Chantix, known generically as varenicline and produced by Pfizer, is a nicotine-free medication prescribed by doctors to help with smoking cessation. It’s been favored for its effectiveness over other nicotine replacement therapies.
However, the drug has been subject to controversy and legal action. Pfizer had to recall Chantix after batches of the drug were found to have high levels of N-nitroso-varenicline, a possible carcinogen. This led to numerous lawsuits against Pfizer from individuals who argued the company should have done more to prevent a potentially lethal chemical from contaminating the medication. These lawsuits were spurred further after the FDA issued a recall of Chantix.
In 2021, after the initial recalls, some of the Chantix lawsuits were consolidated into a class-action lawsuit. However, the credentials of the class action were first tested in front of a judge in mid-February 2022, who dismissed the case. This dismissal does not necessarily indicate the end of Chantix lawsuits; the legal process is still in its early stages, and dismissals can occur in these scenarios. The attorneys representing Chantix claimants have not yet commented on the next steps they will take.
Moreover, more than 200 lawsuits have been filed, alleging that Chantix causes serious, life-threatening side effects. These lawsuits have led to a settlement that covers the cost of legal fees and payments to affected patients for a period of two years of appeals.
